He spent the next 17 years in the service of the Khan, learning about the culture and customs of the Mongol Empire and the countries it controlled. Both of them left their respective homes in the 13th and 14th centuries and embarked on long journeys that took them to far-flung lands and allowed them to experience a wide range of cultures and societies.
